A glorious walk around Alki (West Seattle) this morning. Very foggy when I left Kirkland and stayed that way much of the morning, but as we walked along the shore in Alki, the Seattle skyline emerged and it was a fine sight. The rather large hill during the walk really was not too terribly hard - not like we were angling up a 45 degree slope. Walked by some phenomenal homes (one for sale advertised a 3-story elevator) and got a bird's eye view of some of the roofs that needed work desperately.Friday, February 15, 2002I partook of the Apricot power bar this morning which had to be held together with white school glue. These power bars do seem to have the consistency and taste of either pemmican or sawdust. I did have a bit of a fellow walker's bar whose brand name I cannot remember that can be had from Costco. And that bar was really good. While trying to remember the name I happened upon this website as I searched for nutrition bars http://www.elitefitnessinc.com/nutritbar.html which ran on and on about the different kinds. More than I really needed to know in the end.
Tomorrow I should be able to pass 70 miles walked-to-date, that's the good news. The bad news is that I need to be able to walk further than 5 miles at a shot. Still we have weeks until the event. Ah procrastination!

Tried to post this yesterday but Blogger was blogged down...Tuesday, February 12, 2002Happy Valentine's Day! And with that we can pretty much throw the healthy diet out the door. Bob took me out of contention by leaving a card with a heart-shaped box of chocolates on my office chair. For a moment I waffled on having chocolates and coffee for breakfast or something reasonably healthy - I settled for lasagna which seemed sort of midpoint in the food pyramid.
Mid-morning I did a 5+ mile walk with a purpose. Off to Radio Shack I went to get a remote controlled car for Bob's Valentine's Day present. One hates to put a price on love but "on sale" certainly swayed me. I naturally spent some time checking out the wheel alignment, speed across carpeting versus the kitchen floor and other such important aspects of the purchase once I got home.
I have now walked over 60 miles - which is really quite easy in these 4-5 mile increments. Now I just need to thread them together and make it 15 miles. Training walk this Sunday in Alki with Sheri will be a good one. Unfortunately there seem to be hills involved, fortunately there is a Starbucks at the end.

Whoooweee it is cold out there in the morning for a walk! Hit the 50 mile mark today which was something but also encountered ice on the sidewalks in the crosswalks until the mid-morning sun started melting everything. Brisk but nice - actually almost perfect weather for walking. Five miles doesn't seem very long now - I can get that done in just under an hour and a half.Friday, February 08, 2002Sending off donation forms and envelopes to my friend, Margaret, who will distribute to the non-computer folk in her area. If nothing else I am rich in friends.
Website continues to get lots of visitors each day which I take as an encouraging sign. Just leave your pennies at the door and come on in!

Another stormy day in Kirkland, Wa but I needed to get a copy of McAfee Virus Scan which made me trot off on foot to secure.Wednesday, February 06, 2002I am not sure I believe in the old saying that "Lycra is forgiving." I went to the Big 5 Sports store to find some walkng pants and was appalled...nay shocked at my derriere in lycra. It may hold it in but it is rather obvious about it. I may need to liberate some leftovers in the fridge to get over it.

I share with you now the secret mantra of the Avon 3-Day walk. It is this mantra that each participant should recite daily, nay hourly, as they go about their tasks:Hydrate, Hydrate, Urinate, Stretch
Obviously hydrate means to drink a lot of water and Gatorade (to keep one's electrolytes in balance, whatever they are) and if you do the first part, then you will definitely need to do a u-turn into the loo to do the third part of the mantra. The stretching is supposed to be done each hour or so throughout the day. Even Parade magazine had an article on all this (hydrating, stretching...they didn't mention the loo part) and how it keeps your joints oiled and moving. The sad part of all this is - that it works. Having walked five miles today I am not sore, of course I have been drinking water as though a drought was about to knock on the door. But in the past week I have been drinking about twice what they recommend you drink per day - 8 glasses - so I can down almost 16 with nary a blink. Makes one wonder how dehydrated I was before.
The bad news is that alcohol, coffee (say it isn't true!) and teas actually deplete your body of liquids so you are not encouraged to imbibe of them too much. Have they called Starbucks? What if everyone in Seattle thought this way? Our whole economy would crash.
Got one donation ($10) via the Post Office today. Not rolling in donations yet but at least have had some. Time to get the old Christmas list out and see who I haven't contacted.
